Friday, July 19, 2013 - The newest jewel in the Spring Mountain District AVA in Napa Valley

Just when you think you’ve heard of all the wineries in the valley, a new one is established. That was the case for me last week when I was introduced to the new General Manager of Sarocka, a 1.94 acre vineyard high atop the Spring Mountain AVA. While I had heard about this new project at least a year ago, it wasn’t until yesterday that I was finally able to visit the property and taste the wines. Planted by David Abreu, the Sarocka Vineyard consists of Cabernet Sauvignon, Petit Verdot, Merlot and Cab Franc and is the newest addition to vintner Irene Sarocka Scully’s portfolio of wines she produces.

Under the original winemaking guidance of Helen Keplinger and beginning in 2010, Mike Hirby, they’re also making a Sarocka Vineyard Napa Valley Red that is approximately 60% Merlot and 40% Cab Franc and a Mt. Veeder Red that is predominately Cabernet Sauvignon with a little Cab Franc and Merlot. This Mt. Veeder Red comes from their Scully Ranch vineyard.

Below are a few photos from this truly special property resting above the fog line at 1500 feet in elevation. The vineyard is meticulously farmed and the property has no pretension; it’s truly a hidden jewel producing incredible Reds. The prices are more than fair and the wine in the bottle is outstanding. The flagship wine - Sarocka Spring Mountain District Cabernet Sauvignon 2009. The final blend was mainly Cabernet with Petit Verdor, Merlot and Cab Franc in the final blend. 96 cases were produced. This wine retails for $100 per bottle.

As General Manager, Austin Pitzer, wallked me through the vineyards, I was able to see that the vineyard is just starting to go through veraison. It's ahead of schedule like the rest of the valley, but hasn't come about as quickly as other neighboring properties.

 

Scully Mt Veeder Red 2009 - this was a knockout, especially at its price of $45 per bottle. After tasting this wine, I would've thought it retailed for at least $75.

Scully Max Spring Mountain District Red 2009 is a blend of Merlot and Cab Franc. About 60 cases were produced and while it retails for $55 per bottle, it too tastes like it retails for $75 per bottle.
