Thursday, July 25, 2013 - An Evening at Gandona Estate with awesome Redd Wood pizza

Napa Valley is a small valley, especially when you’re living in it. And last week I was once again reminded of just how small this valley truly is. Coincidentally, the day after I attended a casual gathering at Gandona Estate up on Pritchard Hill, I ran into Bob Long at Sunshine Market. I first met Bob while working on the east coast with Dean & DeLuca in 2003. At the time, he would do market visits to taste us on his releases of Long Vineyards Chardonnay and Cabernet Sauvignon. After more than 28 years making Long Vineyards wine, Bob sold his Pritchard Hill vineyard to Manuel and Cristina Pires, the current owners of Gandona and new stewards of this special land overlooking Lake Hennessey.

We briefly caught up and in the conversation, of course the wine business in general came up as well as Gandona. I told him I had just spent the evening there the night before and that his vines were still thriving and the proof was in the Gandona Estate Cabernet Sauvignon bottling.

After careful consideration in creating a winery team that showcases both Manuel and Cristina’s passion for Gandona as well as their dedication to the land that Bob Long realized in the late 1970’s was so special, this is a unique winery on Pritchard Hill and a great addition to Napa Valley. Thanks to Daniel Ha, the newest member of the Gandona team (General Manager) for organizing this enjoyable, laid-back evening. Photo above: As an homage to Manuel and Cristina's Portuguese heritage, they poured the 2011 Quinta do Vallado White. On the warm evening at Gandona, this was the perfect wine to share with us and is a blend of four White Portuguese varieties - Rabigato, Verdelho, Arinto and Viosinho.
