It’s always nice to feel appreciated. You probably don’t even think twice about opening a door for someone else but when the person acknowledges your small gesture with a thank you, it means something. Last evening’s dinner at Schramsberg was entirely about giving thanks to a new harvest, the new vintage release of their 2005 J. Schram Rosé and 2010 J. Davies Estate Cabernet Sauvignon and to us, the supporters of their brand in the marketplace.
Everything was so carefully planned out – from the picturesque setting in the olive groves to the exquisite food that married perfectly with each specific Schramsberg Sparkling and J. Davies Cabernet Sauvignon. Chef Robert Curry of Auberge du Soleil prepared the menu and the outcome was a complete success. My favorite F&W pairing of the night? It’s hard to say but to keep myself from getting stuffed before even sitting down for dinner, I did have to refrain from going back for more of the Uni Brioche Toast with 2005 Schramsberg Reserve as well as the Smoked Salmon Stuffed Gougeré with 1997 J. Schram Late Disgorged (TOTAL treat that we were able to enjoy this throughout the course of the reception). And after I tasted the newly released 2010 J. Davies Estate Cabernet Sauvignon and cleaned my entire plate of Prime Filet Mignon with Brentwood corn, chanterelles & English pea succotash, they gave me a little more of the succotash to enjoy along with some more delicious bread and soft Strauss’s butter (one of my favorite local butters).
So yes, the food, wine, company and ambience like many other dinners I’ve been fortunate to attend, was top-notch and with no attention to detail spared. But I have to say, the best part of the evening was this overall feeling of genuine appreciation. And I can wholeheartedly say that all of my friends in the business who also attended last evening’s dinner probably went home feeling exactly the same way.
