I received this beautiful cake for my birthday today- what a wonderful surprise treat! The cake itself is so moist and tender: the perfect melt in your mouth texture. I would liken the taste to a sophisticated devil's food rather than a dense dark chocolate fudge. (The only downside to the wonderful light texture and IMHO, not too sweet, not too dark chocolate taste was that it was hard to stop at one piece!) The cake to icing ratio was just right. And the icing was rich and "chocolatey", not cloying, synthetic or overly thick. The quality of the ingredients clearly shows in both the flavor and appearance of the cake. The Callebaut chocolate shavings on the exterior made a lovely presentation and were equally delicious. I have very high standards for chocolate cake and this one was pretty darn close to perfection!! Serving note: It is good cool, but the texture of the icing and cake is even better warm. It would probably be best served at room temp. However, I was so eager to have a piece that I warmed a slice- warm chocolate cake and a glass of ice cold milk- heaven!!! I don't normally write reviews, but when something is this good, it is worth a review. When people send gifts they want to know that it will be special for the recipient- well, this sweet cake was definitely a lovely, special and delicious gift!
