Called "PortWood" because after spending most of its time in oak bourbon barrels, this single-malt scotch whisky's final finishing step is its transference into Portuguese oak barrels that once held fine port wine. Balvenie was one of the first to use this dual finish in their product line and many other distillers have now followed suit. The Balvenie PortWood is a dark amber color in the bottle and lightens up a bit in the glass. The nose is fruity with raisins and nuts, with a touch of smoke in the mix. The first taste is one of smoothness as toffee; oak and port find their areas on your palate. The finish lingers, with the smoke taking on a hint of the bourbon cask.
