Jim and Mary Dierberg purchased the Star Lane Vineyard in 1996 and planted it in 1997, with the ambition of producing world-class Cabernet Sauvignon. This vineyard resides in the newest AVA in California named Happy Canyon of Santa Barbara. The soils and climate here are unique and the region has a promising future for the production of Bordeaux varietals. Also in 1996, they bought a cooler vineyard site well suited to Pinot Noir and Chardonnay a bit farther north in Santa Maria. This vineyard, so named the Dierberg Vineyard, was completely replanted to pursue wines of superlative nature. Planted and insightfully planted with proven clones of great European ancestry along with cutting edge material, the Dierberg Vineyard is often identified as one of the best vineyards in the area. The vineyards are farmed organically and fastidiously farmed for low yields and high quality.
