New Offering Archives

Happy March!

Below are some new offerings that are now available on our website. We’re getting into the swing of spring release season so to be the first to know what I’m bringing into Dean & DeLuca, email me at wine@deandeluca.com and I will include you on our release list. If you have any questions about these offerings or others, please let me know!

Checkerboard Cabernet Sauvignon 2008
The highly anticipated new vintage of Checkerboard is now available. The flagship bottling is comprised of 99% Cab and 1% Petit Verdot and is made by Martha McClellan. Like the ’07, the ’08 vintage showcases the depth and black fruit that comes off the estate vineyard in Diamond Mountain but has even more focus and fuller tannin than the previous vintage. Proprietors Dennis and Steph opened the wine about two hours before I visited them to taste and I’m in agreement with them that their wine is showing incredibly well now but will benefit even more with another year of cellaring. This is one of the few vineyards and places in the Napa Valley that I would consider taking up camping and pitching a tent in their vineyards.

Switchback Ridge, Linne Calodo, Cade, Orin Swift, Failla and newcomers to the wine scene Aloft and The Vineyardist Lazy Susan Ranch Cab! Please let me know if you have any questions about these wines or others. 10% discount applies on discountable wines for the new offerings below on solid or mixed cases.

Happy Hump Day Wednesday!

This is the week for Carter Cellars, Araujo’s new wine Altagracia II, Tierra Roja, Lewis Cellars, Cliff Lede Poetry and Grace Family Vineyards- wineries all making very different styles of wine but all are well-made and as importantly, balanced. Lewis Hillstone Cab, Araujo Altagracia II and Grace Family Cab are a one-time allocation so orders will be filled as received.

10% discount applies on discountable wines for the new offerings below on solid or mixed cases.

One word – Schrader. A winery that you hear about all the time, yet can’t seem to obtain at a fair price. That’s because if you are to find a few bottles, they’re at the gray market price, which is typically 3 times the winery retail. Through on-going discussions with Schrader through the last few months, I was able to get some of their new offerings directly from the winery. This is a big deal. Allocation is limited on all of the new offerings and we will fill requests as received.

Other great offerings to note- a DELICIOUS Cab from Montagna Winery. Retail on this incredible Pritchard Hill Cab? $50 per bottle. Also, one of the best Chards I’ve tasted in awhile sourced from Kent Ritchie Vineyard and made by Londer is now available. Ritchie Vineyard is one of the great Chard sites and typically anything coming off that vineyard is a lot more expensive. Their Anderson Valley Pinot Noir release was also impressive and that too is now available.

RED
Schrader Cellars RBS ToKalon Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon 2009
100% Cabernet Sauvignon sourced from the Beckstoffer ToKalon Vineyard, this ’09 offering is also 100% Clone 337. Aged for 20 months, this reveals intense concentration and an endless finish. Winemaker Thomas Brown has once again given Schrader offerings their trademark intensity and powerful structure with the 2009 vintage offerings.  $280/bottle

Fall release season has officially begun and below are some new offerings I think you would be interested in hearing about and trying. In addition, to help make way for new fall offerings, I've included a few great Cabs with special pricing. Let us know if you have any questions about these offerings or others.

Don't forget, you can go to the archived release offerings by clicking on the tab on the upper right corner that says Offerings Archives. Email wine@deandeluca.com or call us 888.888.1343 to get the special pricing for the wines below.

NEW OFFERINGS

Cherry Pie Stanly Ranch Pinot Noir 2009
The new vintage of Cherry Pie has just arrived. This is Jayson Woodbridge of Hundred Acre's Pinot Noir project. Coming from Stanly Ranch in Carneros, this Napa Pinot reveals a silky smooth texture with lush notes of dark red cherry. Look at the label and there's the flavor profile of this wine. This is one of the few Pinots that we sell out of before the new vintage arrives. I would highly suggest trying a few bottles while we have it available. $58/bottle, $52.2/bottle if you buy a case, either mixed or solid.

Happy Friday!

Below are new offerings I just brought into D&D. Let me know what you're interested in trying. Some of these offerings have small allocations so let me know as soon as you figure out what you'd like. Temps are still hot elsewhere so we can hold until the weather gets cooler.

Barbour Vineyards Cabernet Sauvignon 2008
Jim Barbour has long been known in the Napa Valley as one of the best vineyard managers. Cultivating such vineyards as Casa Piena, DR Stephens, Hundred Acre, Keever, Kelly Fleming and Revana, Jim knows what it takes to make great wine- it's all about the land and growing great fruit. Winemaker Heidi Barrett made what is probably the best vintage yet for Jim. In the bottle, dark purple fruit and structure dominates the wine. A long, satisfying finish makes this wine a treat. Highly recommend for the quality at this price. 327 cases produced. $115/btl

Below are new wines that I was able to secure for Dean & DeLuca. Please let me know what you’re interested in as many of these are extremely allocated. 10% on mixed or solid cases applies on discountable wines. There is also a special priced pack on Shafer offerings. We’re finally experiencing summer here so I would recommend holding on shipping until temps cool down.

Robert Craig Affinity Cabernet Sauvignon 2008
This Napa Valley Cab is a GREAT buy. Just tasted it this afternoon and think it drinks like a $70 bottle of Cab. The final blend was predominately Cab with a little PV, Merlot, Cab Franc and Petit Verdot. Sourced from their Estate vineyard with a little Cab coming from Stags Leap, I would recommend this as a great drinking Cab that only needs about a half-hour to open before drinking. Dark fruit, concentrated with a satisfying finish, you’ll be hard-pressed to find another Cab of equal quality at this price. $50/btl

Dana Estate Helms Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon 2008
This is the first bottling that Dana Estate created from their Rutherford bench vineyard located at the foot of their winery. I’ve been a fan of their wines since their inception and the ’08 is another knockout vintage. The ’08 Helms Cab is a 312 case production and reveals the same deep, full-bodied concentration in the nose to the palate to the finish. This is one of the few Napa Cabs that will age beautifully with time in the bottle. $365/btl net

New Offerings from Turley, Araujo, BOND, Couloir, World's End, Kistler, Lewis & newcomer LaRue

This is a VERY important and exciting time in the world of DEAN & DELUCA wine! We have officially launched our new wine website, Your California Wine Source. I think you'll find that this is unlike ANY wine retail site on the internet today. Our new site is filled with video vintner interviews from some of the best CA wineries along with interactive winery maps and our own wine wall for posting what you're drinking, what wines you love, where you're traveling, etc. My first entries are now posted in my new blog, The Inside Scoop, along with a live twitter feed. We've also archived my release offer letters so in case you missed one or weren't sure of a certain wine I emailed you about, you can look in the archived section which resides in the New Offerings tab.

New Offerings from Kapcsandy, Orin Swift, Brewer-Clifton, Cobb and Faust

Below are new offerings below ranging from great every-day drinking to cellar-worthy potential. Let me know if you have any questions about these wines or others. And again, we will hold your shipping until fall when temps cool down if you'd like; otherwise, I would at least ship 2-day. 10% off on mixed or solid cases on wines that are discountable. Thanks a lot!

CAB/CAB BLEND

Kapcsandy Estate Cuvee Red 2008

The Estate Cuvee is my favorite offering each year that Kapcsandy produces. While the Roberta’s Reserve and Estate Cab are considered more age-worthy, I think the Estate Cuvee shows more fleshy fruit and doesn’t need years and years to start showing its potential. This recently garnered a huge review and deserves it. 2008 was a tiny vintage for Kapcsandy. Normally the Estate Cuvee production is around 1000 cases; the 2008 is 825 cases. Due to limited allocation, orders will be filled as received. $159/btl net

Revana & La Sirena New Releases & Library Offerings from Dalla Valle, Switchback Ridge & Revana

Even though we’re into the thick of summer and very few releases are typically offered this month, I was able to work out allocations of the new vintages of Revana and La Sirena as well as some great library offerings directly from the wineries. I would highly suggest getting some of these library releases as some of them are just starting to show their potential. Unlike other offerings that you might see other retailers, I’m sourcing these directly from the wineries so there’s no doubt about the condition in which they’ve been stored. Let me know if you have any questions!

To avoid cooking your wine in the summer heat, I wouldn’t ship anything unless you’re shipping for overnight delivery. If you would like to get these wines before we finish our allocation but want to hold until temps cool down in the fall, give a call 888.888.1343 and we can arrange that with you.

Amuse Bouche, Caymus, Sinatra, Entre Nous & New Pinot Producer Debaise Wines

Below are some new offerings that I thought you'd be interested to hear about and try. It's finally sunny and warm here (we missed spring and just jumped right into 100+degree summer) so we can store your wine for you in our temp-controlled warehouse until fall if you'd like. Otherwise, I would suggest overnight or 2day shipping.

For 12 bottle case purchases, whether solid or mixed, you can receive 10% on the retail below unless it says net. Also, let me know if you’re interested in more of some of the other wines you picked up.

DuMOL, Dominus, Gemstone, Dancing Hares Mad Hatter & O’Shaughnessy Library Offering

Below are new releases I just brought into DEAN & DELUCA. We are VERY cold in the Napa Valley today but know that the majority of the country is not. So we can hold shipping until fall if you'd like.

I leave for Aspen next week - first time we'll have a DEAN & DELUCA wine table at Aspen Food & Wine Festival! It's pretty great actually. I decided I wanted to get on board at the last minute and fortunately, my friend is the wine editor at F&W Magazine. He was able to pull some strings and even though tables are typically sold out months in advance, he was able to make this work for me. The main goal of getting a table is to launch our new DEAN & DELUCA Wine Clubs- I streamlined our existing clubs to make our new program a better option for gifting and to get our stores involved in wine club selling. I'll also be pouring 4-5 new wines and a great Limoncello. Let me know if you are making the trip out!

For 12 bottle case purchases, whether solid or mixed, you can receive 10% on the retail below unless it says net. Also, let me know if you’re interested in more of some of the other wines you picked up.

Abreu, Buccella, Dalla Valle, Maybach, Vine Hill Ranch, Spottswoode

Happy Tuesday! -  Pretty exiciting news- I leave this Wed to launch our new DEAN & DELUCA wine bar in Bangkok! Opening a wine café in Bangkok isn’t the most newsworthy story but our strategic partner in Thailand is the Real Estate development company that’s building The MahaNakhon building – this will be Thailand’s tallest building when finished. In addition to the D&D Wine Café, there will also be the first Ritz-Carlton Residences in The MahaNakhon. See architect’s link to this - http://www.dezeen.com/2009/07/23/mahanakhon-by-oma/. So I’ll get in late Thurs eve and do press interviews Friday and then host a wine dinner of the wines I selected for the wine café. Saturday I’ll co-host the launch party and dinner and then leave on a 6am flight on Sunday. With the new releases below, please let me know as soon as possible so I can put the wine aside for you before I take off. We can either ship your wine to you or hold in our temp controlled warehouse until it cools down.
For 12 bottle case purchases, whether solid or mixed, you can receive 10% on the retail below unless it says net. Also, let me know if you’re interested in more of some of the other wines you picked up.

RED
Vine Hill Ranch Cabernet Sauvignon 2008 – this is the best new Cab producer of the year so far. Vine Hill Ranch is located in Oakville and is really a miniature Napa Valley in the Napa Valley – their 70-acre vineyard encompasses floor, bench land and mountain Cabernet Sauvignon. Longtime growers for such wineries as BOND, Mondavi Reserve, Etude and Cakebread, vineyard manager Mike Wolf and winemaker Francoise Peschon (former winemaker for Araujo and vintner of Drinkward Peschon) are now taking the best fruit for VHR’s 300 case production. Highly recommend trying a few bottles. Allocation is small – orders will be filled as received. $165/btl net

Checkerboard, Sloan, Araujo, Levy & McClellan, Lewis, Sanguis & Ghost Block Offerings

Happy Monday! Hope you had a GREAT weekend. I’ve brought in a lot of new offerings this month including Checkerboard & Vine Hill Ranch (both debut vintages, highly recommend), Sloan (just got 100pts), Lewis, Dalla Valle, Sanguis, Araujo, Spottswoode, Buccella, Levy & McClellan & Ghost Block. We can either ship your wine to you or hold in our temp controlled warehouse until it cools down. I’ve also included some great drinking wines that aren’t as expensive and highly recommend. Let me know if you have any questions about these wines or others and what you’re interested in trying- thanks a lot!

Below are new releases that I’ve brought into D&D in the past few days- busy time now and I’m still working to finalize a few more big releases next week. And you should also look at the Under Construction Sale wines at the bottom- some great deals on really good wine-

CAB/CAB BLENDS

Futo OV Red 2008 – this is Futo’s second label that you won’t see in the marketplace (unless it’s on the gray market with inflated prices) because there are less than 500 cases produced and I’m the only one getting it direct from the winery. This is a full-bodied offering that will need a little time to tame down but it is UNBELIEVABLE at this price. Remember, these are barrels that blended together better on their own so it’s not the leftover juice or lower quality fruit. Made by Mark Aubert, vineyard managed by David Abreu – this is a remarkable team. One time allocation. $115/btl

A MUST-BUY PINOT!

Elegant and genuinely Pinot is the best way to describe this new offering from the Buoncristiani family from the Russian River Valley. Cousins to the Napa Buoncristiani vintners, Tina just stopped by my office to taste us on her '07 and '08 Orentano RRV Pinot Noir. While the '07 was showing well with clean, warm tones of cherry, it was the '08 that stood out just a bit more. A little more spice on the finish and a touch more depth on the mid-palate, I really enjoyed this new offering. Located on Woolsey Road, Orentano's seven-acre vineyard neighbors Martinelli Winery. Retailing at $36, I HIGHLY RECOMMEND. Available this week!

'Till next time, remember this- drink any and every wine, so long as it's good!

Happy 2011!

I hope you had a fantastic holiday and enjoyed some good wine to celebrate the new year. It was a bustling December in the Dean & DeLuca wine division and what better way to end the month than host a great holiday party for all the vintners I worked with throughout the year. Set at Press Restaurant, next door to our St. Helena store, we served small bites, No. 209 Gin cocktails and over 125 wines that I included in the 2010 catalogs and store selections.

It was a great turnout considering the weather was terrible with major rain storms throughout the day and the French Laundry holiday party was right before ours. With over 100 vintners and winemakers in attendance, we enjoyed each other's company and wine offerings. While I have the opportunity to taste the gamut of California wines, I didn't fully realize that vintners don't always taste others as much as I do. It was nice to create that atmosphere for vintners as well.

The gift packs I created for our wine catalog and holiday catalogs a few months ago are selling like hotcakes this week! It's pretty incredible what happens when you include 3 GREAT wine offerings with special pricing and pack them together to give to friends, colleagues, family. I mean it when I tell people that we make them look great when they give these as gifts. If you haven't seen them yet, click on this link.

In the spirit of the week before Christmas, I've brought in a few small allocations of the following wines with special holiday pricing if you select six solid or mixed bottles or more. They're too limited to put on our website but call us in the Napa Valley and we'll secure your order. 888.888.1343

CABERNET SAUVIGNON/ CAB BLENDS

O'Shaughnessy, Mt. Veeder, Cabernet Sauvignon 2007 - This is O'Shaughnessy's newer Cab from their vineyard on Mt. Veeder but is already giving the Howell Mountain Cab a run for its money with incredible texture and nuance. Intense cab with great delivery.

Harris Estate, Jake's Creek, Cabernet Sauvignon 2007 - Harris Estate is now under the guidance of one of my favorite winemakers in Napa- Thomas Rivers Brown (Outpost, Schrader, Maybach among a few others). This is the first vintage that Thomas played a role in the final blending.

COHO Headwaters Red 2008 This vintage is a blend of 62% Cab, 29% Merlot, 5% Cab Franc and 4% PV. The fruit comes from the Coombsville AVA (Buccella, Merus, Realm source from here) with a small percentage from Diamond Mtn to give it added depth. GREAT for the price. Intense, supply and nice, long finish

PINOT NOIR
Williams Selyem Russian River Valley Pinot Noir 2008
Williams Selyem Central Coast Pinot Noir 2008
Williams Selyem Westside Road Neighbors Pinot Noir 2008

COHO RRV Pinot Noir 2008All 3 of these offerings are great and Gary Lipp, the owner, has priced all offerings very reasonably for the quality in the bottle. Gary learned from Paul Hobbs while working as his assistant winemaker at Paul Hobbs Winery. The '08 RRV Pinot is even better than the '07. Dense and fuller bodied than some RRV pinots.

Wishing you a very happy holiday season
and let me know if there's anything we can do to help!

I just got back from the holiday party at Rudd Estate. The conversation and company was great, the herby, salt crusted Prime Rib made by Dean & DeLuca was decadent and the No. 209 Gin punch was off the charts. Wendi Webster from Distillery No. 209 made the punch with a recipe dating back to the 1800s - it was the perfect pairing for the lunch spread with just enough Gin to give it a kick. Another crucial component to the luncheon - mashed sweet potatoes. The NY Times recently did a big Sunday write-up on the rising popularity of sweet potatoes - one, because of their nutritional value and two, because when made properly, they're just downright delicious. This was no exception. Great texture with a little butter added, they just glided on the palate.

Combining all of our companies together (Dean & DeLuca, Rudd Estate, Distillery No. 209 and Press St. Helena Restaurant) at the Oakville estate, it was a nice respite from our daily tasks, projects and chores. In essence, it was a great afternoon filled with holiday cheer, delicious food and great No. 209 punch and Rudd Estate wine.

'Till next time, remember this- drink any and every wine, so long as it's good!

Last Friday, I attended the SFMOMA reception in celebration of the new art exhibition – How Wine Became Modern: Design + Wine 1976 to Now. I was a little late getting there (no surprise) but made it in time to hear the curator discuss the importance of the Terroir exhibit. In short, it’s a must-see for anyone interested in wine, design and architecture.

This fall release season has been really different than the past few years here. Normally, October is my craziest month for bringing in new releases but this year, November has been far busier- last month was merely the dress rehearsal. This section will be devoted to letting you know about new offerings I’m adding to our selection that are so small in production they don’t make it outside of California or onto our website- that is, until now.

This week I brought in offerings from some of the great Cab houses like Araujo, Merus,
Dalla Valle and Revana. I was also finally able to work out my allocation of single vineyard DuMOLs. I completely agree with vintner Kerry Murphy when he says that his Chard offerings are some of the best yet. Then yesterday, I tasted the brand-new 2008 Switchback Ridge offerings with my vintner friend, Kelly Peterson-Holmes. Believe it or not, their ‘08s are built to last. Finally, I just brought in a newcomer Cab that drinks like a $50 bottle. Real price? $27. The name is Cultivar and it’s a knockout.

Listed are the new releases I just picked up this week. Have any questions or are interested in finding out more about these offerings? Give us a call at our D&D wine offices in the Napa Valley- 888.888.1343 or wine@deandeluca.com.
